It has now been confirmed that this crane has indeed been cut up. This now brings the total number of British breakdown cranes scrapped from preservation to six (which is 17% of those initially preserved): R&R 45-ton 1560 (SR, 1940) CS 30-ton RS1091/30 (BR, 1960), ADRC96100 (BR, 1961), ADRC96101...

There are several reports on Facebook that the GCR(N)'s Cowans Sheldon 36/45 ton crane ADRC95222 was due to have been (and possibly was) scrapped yesterday. Built to an LNER order but delivered to BR, this crane was initially numbered 941602 and allocated to Immingham, later Grimsby, before being tr...

I watched this film again the other day when it was screened on the "Talking Pictures" channel. Not noted in my earlier post is a scene which takes place with the backdrop of Wellingborough's RS1067/30, the first of the LMS 30-tonners from R&R in 1942. This takes place around the 1 hou...

I've just stumbled across the YouTube video linked below, a rather good collection of films (albeit in French) covering the heavy breakdown cranes operated by the S.N.C.F., various recovery operations, and finally an in-depth look at the famous Diplodocus military crane. https://www.youtube.com/watc...

Ken, that is a stunning creation, truly magnificent! It would be fascinating to see some photos of it working. I've taken the liberty of posting below some direct links to some of the photos on the Birmingham Society of Model Engineers website to make it easier for readers to enjoy: https://www.birm...

... It is known therefore that at the very least six cranes worked in support of the big guns in Kent, namely:- LMS - RS1015/50, plus one unidentified SR - 1560S, 1561S, plus either 1196S or 1197S LNER - 941600 ... There is some quite good footage of the NYMR's ex-LNER Cowans Sheldon crane ADRC95224 ex-SB1 in action about eight minutes into the YouTube clip linked below. Not exactly a heavy lift though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqRtZizd_8s The currently-out-of-service 45-ton Ransomes & Rapier crane ...

Thank you for your kind words, gents, they are appreciated. The only real measure of worth for the BDCA website and forum which we as the admin team (all two of us) get to see is in the forum activity. There are visitor figures for the site itself, but there is nothing to indicate if they were accid...
