Some more pictures of the crane. I added the Cowans Sheldon lettering last night and though slightly too large I think it gives the right impresssion. I'm waiting for the chassis to come back from a friend who is machining new axle bearing holders for me. Hope you like the work so far.

Hi everybody, I am retired, and have decided to follow my interests in rail steam cranes and have started to research the R&R 36ton no ADRR95201 located at the Kent and East Sussex railway. I propose to model it in 5 inch gauge with the associated jib runner, stokes bogies etc. I hope to contact the railway people to ask permission to measure and photograph the details as necessary (I hope that this will be possible) In the meantime, I am trying to locate works drawings to familarise myself with the intimate details etc If anybody can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful. (I have been browsing the NRM website for drawings but have not yet come up with anything useful) Thanks for your time Ian |

I know plenty of people at the KESR, especially those on the ground, all top people. If you private message me your email address, i'll ask one of them to contact you. |

Hi Ian, I am sure you have looked at the few posts that I put on for the 5" MP3 build I am doing.. If they prompt any questions, feel free to ask (add them to those threads) cheers Alex |

Hi Ian, welcome to the BDCA and the best of luck with your project. Please remember to keep us informed as you build the model - we like construction threads with lots of photos! I know it probably seems a bit nit-picky, but you will find that neither of the two surviving R&R 36-tonners in the UK have Stokes bogies, since both are on five-axle carriages*. There were actually realtively few 36-ton Stokes cranes in the UK. It would be very interesting one day to see your 5" gauge model of DS81 and Steve's 5" gauge model of its progenitor GWR 2 together, since the differences in major dimensions are not obvious from photos and the 12"/ft cranes have never been at the same place at the same time. *In the interests of complete accuracy I should acknowledge that ex-LMS MP3 has Stokes bogies and was built as a 36-tonner. Alex is of course building a model of this, so perhaps one day all three can be brought together. |

Just a quick update. I've been in touch with a few people at the railway, asking them if it's possible to organise some access to the crane for Ian and i'm waiting to hear back Thanks to David for his assistance. |
