I'm one of the silver surfers, living in Croydon. Once my house backed onto Norwood yard but now unhappily this has become a housing estate. When the yard was in full swing derailments were part of everyday life and a steam crane was used and caused no comment. Shortly before the yard closed an 08 shunter derailed with all wheels on the ground and two steam cranes were used to rerail it. I suppose this was necessary. I used to have Brownlie's book on railway cranes and although it was not easy reading, it was all we had. |
