Following the earlier derailment of an Ivatt tank at Quorn, on the Great Central railway, I understand the 45 ton'er is being used as a breakdown crane. The job is tonight under floodlights.

This is a clip of the actual situation of the derailment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7ofOJsFRlk

According to other reports the loco was rerailed and back in the yard by 21.00.
Do not know if the crane was used or other means.

Looking at the clip I will leave speculation to everybody else but I reckon the trap points worked.

Certainly that appears to show trap points working extremely well! Close call with the leading TPO vehicle. What a fantastic photo opportunity though, I hope that in the coming days some footage of the actual re-railing is posted online.

Photo here of the 45-tonner being shunted into Loughborough shed yard to be lit up. It makes you think that the MHR approach of having the crane in steam at galas is a good one for more reasons than one!

There's another clip on YouTube here which shows the crane travelling to and arriving at the site.

More on YouTube here, showing the start of recovery - the oxy-propane kit's arrived and a start has been made to remove the rear cab roof sheet to allow the loco to be lifted. I imagine the tender drawbar is also cut. I believe that the video creator has edited his clips together in the wrong order, though (the cab roof bolts mysteriously "heal" at the end of the video)!

14.1/2 minutes or so into this clip there is a brief view of recovery underway and the crane in action.

Now also on the ITV news (45 second clip including the steam crane on site).

One of the better photos of the crane on site sofar here.

Still no video of the moment of derailment though - surely someone was there!

Finally a video of the derailment as it happened Just avoid the comments section, full of 'informed sources'

Good find, I was sure that someone would have filmed it.

Without pre-empting the inevitable inquiry, the cause does, on the face of it, look fairly obvious. I can only imagine the awful sinking feeling the crew must have felt when the penny (or tender) dropped!

There was one relevant comment on the notes to the clip. (Under show more.)
It says "The crew had been authorised to pass the signal at danger."

Who forgot the traps? Crew, Signalman or both?

I have seen that comment now in several places, which suggests that there is some truth in it. However there are several things I do not understand, including:-

- Why was it necessary to pass the signal at danger anyway? It is very hard to understand why the movement had to be made past the signal at danger. The only scenario I can think of is that the signal is locked by a TC between the starter and advance starter, and that the TC was occupied. If local regs allow a shunting move up to the starter in such circumstances, then a shunt signal should be provided, and clearly there isn't one. If the signal malfunctioned, then a handsignalman should have been provided, and clearly no handsignals came from the ahead of the movement or the box.

- Since it is likely that the only detection on the trap switches is provided by the signal, any movement over the traps with the signal at danger is inherently extremely dangerous and as such a higher-than-normal level of vigilence would be expected of everyone involved in the movement.

- The trap and the turnout on the main line will be worked off the same lever, so even if the trap itself was out of the line of sight of the crew it should have been fairly obvious that the turnout on the main wasn't set correctly.

It will indeed be interesting to see a report into this incident.

Has any more video of the Crane operations surfaced yet?
