I've looked at Peter Tatlows LMSR steam travelling cranes list without finding anything certain but a James Taylor of 1892 could be possible. Being chain roped I would suspect that early. But if it was not actually classed as a Travelling crane he might not have picked it up. I suspect it is the same as this - probably pictured outside the Crewe Works paintshop? This does appear to be capable of being a travelling crane. It does not appear to be fully roped/chained. I must have found the pic on the NMSI website when it was known as the NMSI and had that catalogue number. I have tried to find it again on the ScMusm and NRM photograph galleries - without success. What a pity your man had so many mates who wanted their photo taken!

Chris - belated thanks for your interesting reply and photo. It does look remarkably like that in the group photo. Regards Pete |
