Reading the posts here, and re-reading WP Robinson's book "From Steam to Stratford" has triggered me to try to track down the dates and allocations etc for Stratford's cranes. There is some confusion in the public records, hopefully we can resolve some of this with the collected knowledge of this forum!

Focussing on the period post-1961, I have notes of the following:-

75-ton Cowans Sheldon steam crane DB966111 (later ADRC96701) was there from new until 1977 when it was sent to Derby for conversion to D/H.

During 1977 and 1978, whilst conversion or the 75-tonner was taking place, 36/45-ton Cowans Sheldon steam crane 941602/ADRC95222 was loaned to Stratford. At that time this was "owned by" Derby Works but still branded Immingham (its last regular shed). After use at Stratford it went to Finsbury Park then Thornaby, was wirthdrawn from Derby in '86 and sold to the DFR, then resold to the GCR(N) and is now at Ruddington.

In 1978, RS1094/75 (later ADRC96704) was sent to Stratford immediately after conversion from steam to D/H (and this is the main question I hope can be clarified - Robinson's book suggests that ADRC96701 was returned to Stratford after conversion, but I rather think that it went to Holbeck from 1978 to 1988). ADRC96704 remained at Stratford until 1988 when it was transferred to Tinsley and ADRC96701 came back from Holbeck. I think that ADRC96701 then remained at Stratford until withdrawal (it was OOU and in store at BAD Kineton by 1999).

Cowans Sheldon 75-ton telejib crane ADB966094/ADRC96715 was sent to Stratford from Carlisle Upperby in 1999, but from about 2002 didn't seem to be there much (was at OOC by 2006).

However, there are some records to suggest that 45-ton steam crane ADRC95219 (later ADRC96720) was at Stratford between 1972 and 1980.

If anyone can confirm or otherwise contradict any of the above, I would be grateful!

Roger,

In a discussion on build dates elewhere on this forum, I mentioned a chart of the 1960s-built 30-ton and 75-ton cranes that appeared in a magazine article written by Alan Earnshaw. I have now dug out the magazine (Steam World No. 70 of April 1993) and am reminded that Alan stated the chart to be the work of Peter Tatlow.

In my view (and I'm sure yours) compilation by Peter gives the chart significantly more credence than if it had come from Alan or anyone else.

According to the chart, the allocations in question were as follows:
DB966111 - Stratford, converted 1977, Holbeck, Stratford (?/88).
RS1094/75 - Carlisle (Kingmoor), converted?, Stratford.

Further, a so-far-silent member of this forum who worked at Stratford in the 1970s confirmed to me some time ago that DB966111 went to Holbeck immediately after conversion.

I can't help more than that. Incidentally, I know you have a copy of the magazine mentioned above as I bought it on your recommendation!

Peter (Robbo) used to log everything on the way back from each job, so I would go with him on the crane movements, I cant remember exactly what year I got 701 back, I thought it was earlier than 1988, I will have to find my old crane ticket to get some idea of the date, hiowever I do know that 701 did stay at Stratford until the end driven by jeff (forgotten his last name now)

I can tell you that 701 came back to Stratford from Ashford not Holbeck.
