Currently reported as out of service at Bescot due to requiring repairs to bearings. It appears the plan is to move it to Wigan for these repairs and replace it at Bescot with either 96714 or 96713 currently at Wigan.

ADRC 96714 reported at Warrington en route to Bescot to replace ADRC 96715. Also ADRC 96710 normally located at Knottingley is reported as "Available at Worksop"!!!!!!!!!!

Reported status as at 02:00 20th April

Bescot Crane - ADRC96710 - Available at Wigan
Knottingley Crane - ADRC96714 - Available at Knottingley
Wigan Crane - ADRC96713 - Available at Wigan
Spare - ADRC96715 - Out of service at Wigan for bearing repairs

Therefore three out of the four cranes are currently at Wigan and there seems to have been a change in the Knottingley crane where ADRC96714 has replaced ADRC96710

Anybody know the logic of keeping all three cranes up that way? I seem to remember that Old Oak's crane was once considered the cover for anything in London, the South and South West?

Theres no crane in the south because....

Stratford EWS...Gone
OOC EWS/DBS.......Gone
Temple Mills EWS/DBS....Gone
Dollands Moor,EWS/DBS ...not suitable
Ipswich.....EWS depot Gone
Hither Green....Gone
Three Bridges EWS/DBS.....not suitable
Acton. EWS/DBS......not suitable
Eastleigh, now under different regime
Wembley. DBS...Not suitable
St Blazey....Gone
Cardiff....different owners
Bristol Barton Hill, under new ownership
Margam EWS/DBS.....Gone

So that doesn't leave many EWS/DBS depots in the south east, even in my days in EWS daun saurf, getting breakdowns crews together was damned difficult, and that was 12 years ago.

So thinking about it, Bescot is one of the most Southernly DBS depots that can take a full breakdown train (until and if ever the new set up for breakdown and recovery takes over Didcot)

Good point about all the depots closing. Don't forget, Privatisation was our saviour from that evil company known as British Rail :o . What did they know about running a railway anyway? ;)

London & South East land covered by a DB Schenker gang working out of Dollands Moor depot using two plain white vans supplied by NR. Difficuly in retaining and rostering HGV1 trained staff members to drive the road rail SRS vehicles in part led to this, but the main reason is that the smaller vans can reach access points, squeeze into station car parks and one way roads to reach access points then trolley equipment to site. They will be 'mobilised' first along with a 'Recovery Engineer' to assess what is required and what sort of lift is needed. North of the Thames (and other areas) the overhead line gets in the way so mfd jacking preferred without disturbing the knitting (altough isolation required in some cases).

Dollands Moor's road vans are not Net Rails, they are DBs's, also Dollands Moor has a virtual Skeleton staff these days, and have had to have support from other depots, to make up crews, when they couldn't fully compliment.

This has been the way for a long time, I used to do the rostering from OOC for the former Anglia and Southern regional area of EWS and it was always difficult, especially with "Hidden hours"

It's not that the MFD is preferable under the wires, as for most rerailing the wires will almost certainlly have to be isolated anyway, ditto third rail. In 30 odd years, I can count about only 12 times (ish), that I've been out with a crane, these days they are normally only taken out where vehicles are overturned or a major stack up. Most jobs can be done with a SRS/BRUFF or Transits. Our new equipment for Freightliner utilises Tansits and large box trailers. Even then if we need a crane, 9 times out of 10 we hire a road crane.

Also, a "Recovery Engineer" doesn't always go out, they normally only attend the bigger incidents or main line, smaller jobs tend to use the Team Leader or a Breakdown supervisor to be in charge of the job.

66739 derailed all wheels at Mountfield (Sussex) at 15:10, 25th April. A breakdown crane required on site to assist in rerailing the locomotive. The Bescot crane ARDC96710 arranged with booked departure time of 0518, 26th April 2012. Rerailing was not expected to be completed until at least 1600.
