Album - Breakdown Crane Testing at Waterside Works

BDCA member Robin Baldry has provided the following photographs of his father, Robert Baldry, engaged in testing Ransomes & Rapier breakdown cranes at Waterside Works, Ipswich.

Chris Capewell believes that all three photos are of a 30.5 ton crane built to R&R order no. G6717 and delivered to the Nizam Railway in India in September 1950. (The Nizam Railway was nationalised in 1951 to become part of the Central Railway which itself is part of Indian Railways.)

Chris says that a distinguishing feature of G6717 is the slope to the top of the superstructure frame. His identification is backed up by the number 6717 that can be seen chalked on the cab-side in two of the photos.

Robin's father served in the RAF as an armourer on Spitfires and joined R&R after the war, working in the test yard and travelling widely for them. Robin also worked for R&R, in the fitting shop and test yard, and now works for the fire service workshops.
