Re-wheeling 41708, 3.6.1967 (1)

'159 is seen here raising loco 41708 for re-wheeling at Holbeck on 3rd June 1967.

Les Woad has provided some more information:
"I have had a chat with my brother [Peter] about this loco. If you look at the wheels they are newly painted because they were re-tyred. I cannot remember why the engine came onto the shed but on examining the wheels we found they had badly worn hollow treads and flanges. We took the three pairs of wheels out, putting the loco on packing beside No. 1 Exam Pit whilst its wheels were sent away."

The crane was still in black at the time, almost two years after the BR instruction of July 1965 that all breakdown cranes were to be painted red. They would be repainted upon their next heavy overhaul after issue of the instruction.

AS THESE PHOTOS WERE BEING TAKEN I WAS IN THE PIT UNDER THE LOCO WITH TWO OTHERS TO GUIDE THE AXEL BOXES INTO THE HORN BLOCKS, AS YOU CAN SEE THE LOCO IS NOT PERFECTLY LEVEL WHICH MADE IT QUITE EXCITING.
