Tank Wagons off at Colton, 4.6.1981

Crane driver Peter Woad relates the following:
"There were eight tanks derailed together and a single one about half a mile further up the track. We dealt with the first vehicles, then while we were moving up to the odd one I got off the crane and went for a sandwich in the riding van. We started moving forward when someone shouted to stop, but too late as the crane jib hit an overhead cable and brought it down. It was a power cable and Colton and two other villages were blacked out. Our former shedmaster lived locally and lost a freezer full of food because he was on holiday."

Two pictures of the Healey Mills crane attending the recovery will be found in the Cowans Sheldon album ADRC95218.
