Interesting photo, in that the jib is fully raised and both hooks are on the deck. David says that the depot was very quiet and there were no staff working on or around the crane even though it was a Monday afternoon.

It's possible that the crane was configured that way for cleaning, inspecting and oiling the ropes, with a cherry-picker or suchlike taking the service engineer up and down.

    Cleaning and oiling the ropes is much easier to do when standing near the drums and bringing the ropes to you. The roof has to be taken off to do that with the derrick ropes.
