96714 and 95218 Recover an Engineers Crane, 10.9.1981

The picture shows both Healey Mills cranes, 75-tonne ADRC96714 and 45-ton ADRC95218, recovering an engineers crane that had toppled whilst over-reaching to put some old track down a hollow.

96714 had been at Holbeck for repairs and was rushed back for this job. Breakdown foreman Les Woad says that this was the first and only time he used two cranes with one gang of men.

I was asked to measure the jib length and angle as well as ascertain the superstructure angle on the engineer's crane to confirm that the crane was overloaded. The track panels that the crane was recovering were cut into 30 foot lengths, but the fishplates were still in place, so instead of undoing them and picking up 30 foot panels, the guys were picking up 60 foot panels. What really surprised me was that they had managed to get one 60 foot panel down - it was the second one that brought the crane over.
